Onmutu Mechanicks: Nocturne

[8 November 2010]

By Jason Cook

Nocturne is a murky Drexciya album by Onmutu Mechanicks gone dub and minimal, and without the thrashing TR-808. There are thus a few key elements you must appreciate before listening: delay, reverb, bass, constant knocking sounds. Better have a decent sub-woofer too. This 80-minute work plods without much sense of direction at first, only recovering its true north four tracks in, with the extra-spacey “Neutrino”. By the time you reach track seven, “Across The Styx”, you’ll feel prepared for its eleven-minute slow-built burning ambience, a fiery submersible sinking. It’s all a good listen, but you’ve got to want it.
