Sweetgreen’s Sweetlife Food & Music Festival 2012 on Saturday

[24 April 2012]

By Corey Beasley

Washington, DC’s Sweetlife Food & Music Festival is a summer blowout of a different sort. Yes, there will be megastar bands and smaller indie acts, local vendors, lots of food—more on all of that later. But Sweetlife, sponsored by Sweetgreen—a local franchise of organically-minded, deliciously gourmet salad restaurants—has its eye on the future of summer festival culture. That “green” in Sweetgreen doesn’t just refer to Romaine, with Sweetlife putting a premium on environmental sustainability. Festival vendors will use biodegradable utensils, cups, and napkins; Global Inheritance will set up its TRASHed Store, where attendees can bring bottles and cups collected from the grounds to a tent in exchange for prizes and swag; and compost bins will be placed next to every trashcan at the festival to reduce Sweetlife’s landfill footprint. And if that wasn’t enough, Sweetlife’s locavore mindset means food at the fest will be provided by local vendors who don’t have to truck all the way across the country to bring you your dinner.

About that food. There’s a reason Food gets equal billing with Music in Sweetlife’s marquee. With offerings from David Chang’s famous Momofuku Milk Bar, the award-winning Luke’s Lobster truck, mouthwatering Shake Shack, celeb chef and local hero José Andrés’ Pepe Truck, and many, many more, dining at Sweetlife will prove an unparalleled experience—and not only for a music festival. The food, of course, will be sustainably sourced.

While you finish your second lobster roll or gouda grilled cheese, you’ll be treated to some of the hottest musical acts of the year. Electro house hero Avicii headlines the evening, promising full-throttle beats when the sun goes down. Before his set, you can catch eclectic rapper Kid Cudi, indie rock heroes The Shins, post-rock titans Explosions in the Sky, soul revivalists Fitz and the Tantrums, up-and-coming hiphop virtuoso A$AP Rocky, and indie pop darlings Fun. And that’s just on the mainstage. The smaller, shady Treehouse Stage features electro-pop crooner Twin Shadow, bewitching chanteuse Zola Jesus, and plenty of other acts to keep your hips moving. So, get your tickets now—not only is Sweetlife a guilt-free festival, it’s a hell of a lot of fun, too.
