Cover EPs are a blessing and a curse. They’re great for a fun time or to rediscover old favorites. In some rare cases, there may even be an instance where you wind up with a new favorite cover. For the most part, though, their only function is to serve as an artistic exercise, to help artists find and hone a distinct voice by exorcising their style over existing songs. On Woody Pines’ You Gotta Roll, while certainly a really fun listen, it does seem to tend toward the latter more often than not. All five covers are, unmistakably, great covers that present Woody Pines’ style wonderfully, but overall You Gotta Roll just seems like a toss-off novelty release. However, it’s fun enough that it’s hard to care and acts as a wonderful introduction to the Pines, who’s worth keeping an eye on.
