“O Sweet Joe Pye” may have little company in the field of songs that are odes to weeds, but this makes the tune all the more stunning. Artists continue to use Motown motifs to varying effects, but its employment here gives the song additional layers. The good-natured, invigorating feel of the music gives Pascal’s memories of growing up in a decaying Detroit a sugar-coating that’s wholly satisfying if a little addictive.
I’ve listened to “O Sweet Joe Pye” three times today, and could easily go for three more this afternoon.
