NEW YORK — “Billy Elliot” and big stars swept the Tony Awards nominations Tuesday morning.

The musical, with a score by Elton John, has 15 nominations. Yasmina Reza’s “God of Carnage” has the most nods in the new play category — six — with nominations for its entire four-actor cast, including James Gandolfini.

“9 to 5,” the Dolly Parton musical, has four nominations, but not for the big prize, best musical. In its place is the very dark horse, “Rock of Ages,” a jukebox musical about ‘80s metal-head bands, which got five nominations.

Nominations also went to such bold-face names as Jane Fonda (“33 Variations”) Angela Lansbury (“Blithe Spirit”) and Geoffrey Rush (“Exit the King”). Conspicuously absent is Daniel Radcliffe — aka Harry Potter — who made his much-admired Broadway debut in the fall in “Equus.”

British director Matthew Warchus occupies two of the four best-director slots for “God of Carnage” and “The Norman Conquests,” the three-play comedy revival that has seven nominations.
