Psychedelic pop best suited to be heard in church pews really had a good year in 2009, no? Grizzly Bear basically busted things wide open for everyone, and heaps of bands followed suit. While many might lump Pick a Piper in with that crowd, their self-titled debut EP contains such an explosive and inebriated edge that it might defy the categorization that the mighty Griz basically call their own. The furious and somewhat debilitating percussion work that keeps Pick a Piper afloat is truly visceral. The manic yet harmonious swarm of “Bechtel Park” borders on something defining what you might hear in a sweaty rock club, and for that we have Brad Weber to thank. As the touring drummer for Caribou, he knows a thing or two about psychedelic pop, and he exposes his knowledge in propulsive spades on this one.
