The Flying Eyes: The Flying Eyes

Baltimore’s the Flying Eyes’ debut self-titled album brings together the best of acid rock and early metal. Will Kelly is the spitting sound of Glenn Danzig, with his gravelly, boozy vocals. Occasionally, Kelly ends up sounding a bit like Jim Morrison on a rough night, as in “Better Things”. However, in some such instances Mac Hewitt (bass) backs him up vocally, diverting the gruff a la Jerry Cantrell. Occasionally Kelly gets swept away in his presentation and misses a few notes (e.g., “She Comes to Me”), but those moments are easily overlooked. The album comprises two of their EPs: Bad Blood and Winter, broken into two parts, at least in the liner notes. It all sounds like a pretty cohesive record, considering that sometimes many of the lyrics are indecipherable. Check out “Red Sheets” for a stripped down percussion (by Elias Schutzman), electric guitar and feedback-heavy (by Adam Bufano), spaghetti western thriller that one most certainly can understand.
