In the globe trotting action-comedy Knight and Day, James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma,Walk the Line) directs tabloid institutions Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in their first film together since 2001’s Vanilla Sky. The trailer hints at a summer blockbuster that’s competently constructed, if not ultimately disposable. The action scenes look pretty eye popping, but one wouldn’t be off base in doubting whether the “comedy” part of the formula really delivers. It doesn’t really matter though, as there seems to be enough going on in the film to satisfy every demographic at some point.
It remains to be seen, however, whether Cruise can still draw an audience after tepid responses to Valkyrie and Lions For Lambs. But since the release date was pushed up to June 25 to avoid competing with The Last Airbender, I’d probably bet on it.
