A bit of a teaser, Underworld’s iTunes released set from London’s Roundhouse on July 17, 2010 harkens back to their classics but also hints forthcoming songs on Barking may not contain the same frantic live energy.
Unlike past live release, Everything, Everything Live, Underworld’s iTunes digital EP feels lacking; not simply because it has just six tracks. The continuity of a live experience is lost because of fading in and out between songs. People salivating for massive new “classic” tunes from Barking, should allow time for the album to settle into live rotation. Of the new songs, “Always Loved a Film” is relatively even keel for Underworld but is a good primer in the opening slot. Unfortunately latest single, “Scribble”, feels less vibrant and lacking in its live incarnation. Yet vintage (nothing is from Oblivion with Bells) tunes retain their power. “Two Months Off” brims with frothing energy and Karl Hyde’s manic laughter while “Rez/Cowgirl” crests into an epic climax and allows Hyde to vent his enthusiastic personality. And the relentless finale combo, uber-hyper “King of Snake” and triumphant “Born Slippy Nuxx”, are wholly satisfying and continue to blow audiences away.
