It’s been since 2008 that Lazer Sword offered up their stunning, unprecedented track “Gucci Sweatshirt” to the blog-world for absolutely nothing. After nearly a year and half, that track saw an official 12” release on Innovative Leisure, and it seemed like there wasn’t a lot else being released by the Lazer Sword duo. Now we’ve come to find out, they were working on an album.

Made up of DJs Low Limit and Lando Kal, Lazer Sword have carved themselves a reliable niche of crunchy bass and synthesizer interpretations of hip-hop music, somewhere between Daft Punk’s French rlectro and crunk. If this pairing seems novel, it is. Their best efforts have come when making these influences most obvious, as was the case with “Gucci Sweatshirt”. However, their self-titled debut falls short, partly because they often opt for glitchy fragmentation, something that works wonders in their live show when dancing can afford the stutter-step, but in headphones and with vocalists, it’s hard to hear what either singer or Lazer Sword are saying.
