Sentieri Selvaggi is to Italy as Bang on a Can is to America: an all-star team of forward-thinking musicians dedicated to performing the classical music of today. The group has been around since 1997, so they’ve had plenty of time to rub elbows with top-shelf composers. And though this contemporary ensemble is on speaking terms with Gavin Bryars and Philip Glass (guaranteeing a commission or two here and there), they have chosen to record older works from each of these iconic men on their new 16-minute EP, Sentieri Selvagi Plays Gavin Bryars & Philip Glass. “Sub Rosa” and “Facades” are the two works, and they are largely faithful to the original scores. This bodes well for their professional sense of musicianship, but it might not be an enthralling listen for the budget-minded listener in search of music that hasn’t been done before.
