Opeth and Katatonia are two of the most highly imitated bands in the world of modern metal, because the balance in the sounds of both bands between ambient and energized is perfect. However, it is also nearly impossible to achieve without years of practice and more than a little musical genius. Unfortunately for Los Angeles-based group Ancestors, they still need a bit more work before finding that balance. On their new three-track EP Invisible White, only closing song “Epilogue” manages to have enough energy and balance to attract listener attention. The other two songs are pure slow ambience to the point of repetition, losing appeal with each passing minute. Ancestors needs to better develop their sound over time if they hope to gain a wider following.
