It's tough to argue with The Handcuffs' formula: sexy female vocals, big rock riffs, and stupid-but-easy-to-sing-along-with lyrics.
The Handcuffs, officially drummer/songwriter Brad Elvis and singer/keyboardist Chloe F. Orwell (and unofficially the rest of their band), seems to have its formula figured out. Waiting for the Robot, the band's third album, is full of big, dumb rock songs that aim for the gut, not for the brain or heart. Elvis' lyrics are simple and often downright stupid, but Orwell's full-throated, sexy vocals are the perfect vehicle to deliver them. Her enthusiasm makes it clear that The Handcuffs are fully aware that rock and roll doesn't have to be smart or emotional to still be a lot of fun. From bluesy rockers like "Dirty Glitter" and power ballads such as "Eight Down", to the catchy sing along "Everybody Waves Hello", Waiting for the Robot is definitely fun. I just wish that Elvis and Orwell were even the slightest bit interested in being more substantive. If they were, there's a pretty solid chance The Handcuffs could make the jump from being a fun band to a great band.
