Doubtless some of the prettiest avant rock you’re ever going to hear, this Glasgow outfit throws in fiddle, virtuosic drumming, elements of world and folk music and smothers it all (in a good way) with the truly unique vocals of Nerea Bello. Theatrical but unpretentious, unpretentious and entirely arresting, the 13 pieces that comprise Turnip Famine go by entirely too quickly — one of the sure signs that this is a truly ace record. The opening “Lord Phunkar” and the wheezing “She Danced To Sirens” are two of the best from the album’s front half while “Between The Showers” and “Minneto” do nicely for the latter.
