Roy Shakked covers 13 classic tracks so we don’t have to, ranging from Ice Cube (“It Was a Good Day”) to Queen (“Bicycle Race”) to Massive Attack (“Paradise Circus”), then back to INXS (“Need You Tonight”), Genesis (“That’s All”) and Elvis Presley (“Don’t Be Cruel”). Depeche Mode’s “Wrong” is cast as a stomping Delta-inflected rocker, Macy Gray’s “Why Didn’t You Call Me” becomes a bar band stomp, and ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” receives the a capella treatment it’s always deserved. Does it all work? Surprisingly, yes, which is a rarity for covers collections. Watch for an album of originals coming soon. In the meantime, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the heck out of this.
