Post Jazz Mistress: Global Warming

I once happened upon a blog that accused any musical genre with the “post” prefix as sucking the fun out of whatever the second word was. Of course, fun is not the only thing people derive from music – for some it’s not even on their list of requirements. As a general rule, these listeners are more concerned with something good or original, two things that the Italian trio Post Jazz Mistress promise and deliver. Caught between two worlds where jazz has a rock edge and pop melodies come with dense shapes and harmonies, these guys are a treat for those weary of music that bends labels purely for show. They’ve got the recognizable parts of post-rock going for “Listen to Me, My J.”, a gentle, Frisellian cover of “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”, a pastoral trip over Windhall Hill on “Greetings from Fairbanks”, and a Hawaiian flavor to “The Seven Secret Pools” that is…well, fun.
