Baron Von Luxxury Updates the '80s with "Terry Richardson" (PopMatters Premiere)
Though the vibe nostalgically recalls these bygone eras, the song still manages to feel very current, and practically demands that listeners make a trip to the dance floor.
Baron Von Luxxury, known to friends as Blake Robin, is a man of many talents. He wears the hats of producer, songwriter, blogger, DJ, vocalist and, having recently signed with Manimal Vinyl, the artist can now add another creative endeavor to his resume: a debut album, out 14 February, entitled The Last Seduction. Renowned for his funky electro-disco remixes of songs by artists like Hilary Duff and Dirty Sanchez, Baron Von Luxxury also operates a popular music blog called Disco Workout. He has written songs with talents like Little Boots and Bonnie McKee (who penned Katy Perry’s megahit “California Gurls”), and his work has recently been featured on a variety of TV shows, such as The Hills and CSI: Miami.
Straight from The Last Seduction, Baron Von Luxxury’s new dance-inducing single “Terry Richardson” makes its debut here on PopMatters. The synths that open the song recall trippy '70s ballads, and the lyrics throwback to '80s hits, with the infectious chorus of “Take Me to the Top, Don’t Ever Stop”. Though the vibe nostalgically recalls these bygone eras, the song still manages to feel very current, and practically demands that listeners make a trip to the dance floor. The Last Seduction as an album overall is reminiscent of the work of Twin Shadow, Pet Shop Boys, Sparks, Empire of the Sun, and Electric Light Orchestra. So far the LP seems to be a hit, with positive reviews, like Urb.com’s evaluation: “Von Luxxury brings all the innocence and upbeat goodness he’s been curating on his blog, Disco Workout, for the last several years to “Seduction”, and a little intelligence as well, proving that it and humor can make a very good partnership if one just succumbs to that universally perverse force: the merger of opposites.”
