Bondi Blaster: Lo’ Juimo!

Juan Data is one of those inventors who like to be hard on themselves. We know that because he sings an entire four-minute eleven-second track without using any vowel except A. Is this the world’s first Oulipo rap? Possibly not but then what was? We can hear evidence of his self-challenging personality in the rest of this EP, too — we can even hear it in the Oulipo track before we learn that he is only using A — because he has compressed his shambolic blasting rip of hip-hop-cumbia-latin-all-kinds-of-things together with an Andean flute. An incongruous pile-up of ideas but incongruous pile-ups are his thing, his forte, the mountain where he brilliantly plants his flag. The bonus tracks, instrumentals, remixes, looser, lazier, show you how compressed and explosive the nonbonus tracks are by comparison. “Bondi,” we’re told, “is Argentine slang for bus,” and the notion of travelling and picking up things as you go is treated like a useful theme.
