Shapes of Animals is a very fun record to listen to. There are breezy melodies, a laid-back approach, and a deeper understanding of the roots of sun-drenched pop than most bands held up as contemporary examples of the genre possess. Every song is a remarkably consistent slice of sunny powerpop and it’s sequenced to perfection. Unfortunately, the songs never make it past enjoyable listens and fail to stick. This isn’t a new problem with powerpop; the genre’s actually notorious for it. However, there are moments on Shapes of Animals that suggest that will be remedied, given some time. The Fadeout’s talent as a group is remarkably clear and they understand their craft. It’ll be exciting to watch them build on this.
