Andy Jaffe: Manhattan Projections

There are very few jazz releases that warrant the number of re-releases Manhattan Projections has gotten. Fortunately, Manhattan Projections is actually one of them.

Big Round records isn't holding back with its reissue of Andy Jaffe's Manhattan Projections. In addition to the original seven works from the original release of Manhattan Projections, they've included session tracks from the previous reissue and three new exclusive tracks from the Tom McClung-Andy Jaffe piano trio. All of these tracks have cemented their place in jazz history because of how well sequenced they are and how thoughtfully they're arranged. The seamless pitch shifts, the fragmented melodic runs, the tone of the instrumentalists, everything works. It takes a lot for a record to be an inarguable classic and Manhattan Projections needlessly re-states its case. The fact that the bonus tracks only add to the original release instead of detract from it is the most impressive part. This is definitely a release that's always worth purchasing.
