Adam Myatt and Glenn Jackson are the two people that make up James & Evander and recently released a very strong debut LP called Bummer Pop. The band introduces their style well with lead-in track “Ambigamy” that showcases their ability to make summer-y dream-pop that straddles a strange line between sounding optimistic and withdrawn. That balance is, somewhat surprisingly, maintained over the entirety of Bummer Pop. James & Evander gradually reveal themselves to be incredibly sharp songwriters with a knack for brilliant production flourishes, whether it’s the Explosions in the Sky-esque guitar parts in “Long Distance” or the ambient washes of “CTSOF”. It’s not too surprising that this pair’s from Oakland and running with Elephant & Castle. There’s something exciting happening in that scene and Bummer Pop is only the most recent bit of proof.
