Kemp & Eden: Black Hole Lace

Two six-year-olds met while playing with ducks, and then moved apart from each other. Nearly a decade later, they met again to resurrect the songs they wrote together in their youth.

Black Hole Lace consists of the songs that were written together by Kemp & Eden in their (much) younger days. What's so unexpected about this is how good the songs sound now. How much change the original songs were subjected to is a matter of guesswork, but their eerie core still remains. There's something slightly unnerving propelling these nine tracks. Of the duo, Kemp Muhl has had slightly more music experience, releasing records and performing with her other duo act, Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, with Sean Lennon.

Despite all that works on Black Hole Lace, this collection of songs just can't hold up to other great records from this year, though that doesn't seem to be the intention of Kemp or Eden. This is a release that seems to exist as purely a curiosity. While it's a compelling idea, once it's done, it's over. Now, all that's left to see is if they're concocting a follow-up.
