Object Lesson: Exclusive Preview of “Nightwing #0”

Already in his origin story you begin to get the sense that Bruce Wayne’s story is not going to be a simplistic tale of revenge. There’s discipline and fortitude that will pull him beyond the grief he experiences in that moment of his parents’ murder. But that discipline and fortitude is still to come. At the point of impact, it’s a story-act of ornamentation that creates a more impactful moment.

The story of Bruce Wayne’s most tragic loss was always a story of deep, emotional impact. Not simply because of the anxious drama of the moment, but by way of its telling. It is the gunshot, it is Bruce’s dad diving in front of the bullet, it is Bruce himself kneeling in the impromptu spotlight of the streetlamp, his parents’ bodies beside him. And perhaps, most poignantly, it is the elegant string of pearls his mother wore, flying across the sidewalk.

While Dick Grayson’s originary moment is equally tragic, it has always lacked the emotionally captivating objects that Bruce’s story has always been ornamented by. That is, always lacked those emotionally-laden objects, until now.
