Becky Jones steps out into the spotlight on her own for the first time and winds up with a career highlight.
With Groove Armada and the RGBs Becky Jones had formidable partners in crime but always seemed to steal the spotlight. Her debut record as Saint Saviour, Union, not only cements my opinion on her raw talent but ultimately exceeded my expectations. It would've been easy for Jones to take the easy way out and back-pedal for ideas and make a solid record. Instead, her forward-thinking and willingness to explore new territory helps make it a minor thrill. Union's a nicely sequenced record that offers enough variety in pacing to keep the listener invested while still managing to feel incredibly coherent. Jones' vocals throughout are more than impressive, as is the production, but by the end of "Horse", it's clear that she's capable of more. Ultimately, Union stands out as a brave first step of a bold new artist who seems poised enough to emerge as a major force.
