Red Clover Ghost: Red Clover Ghost

Maryland twins Clint and Gibb Cockrum play a gentle acoustic music under the monicker Red Clover Ghost, using their interwoven voices and an array of acoustic instruments, particularly guitar. Unsurprisingly, the aesthetic is low-tech and lo-fi, and it’s all terribly breathy and sincere. For connoiseurs of breathy sincerity, there are some nice moments here: opener “Nobody Knows” offers sweet harmonies over a lilting melody line, while “Bear Hill” is a wistful number imbued with longing and tinkling banjo arpeggios. The best tune here is “If I Could Only Have the Last Time”, which offers a chugging rhythm that gives shape to the song’s four and a half minutes. By record’s end, though, a certain monotony has set in–but long before that happens, a vibe is established and maintained. Listeners who find solace in foklie mellowness are more likely to enjoy the album than those who like their music, even their acoustic music, performed with a little more vigor.
