Shadoks Music once again unearths a previously lost bit of classic rockage, this time in the form of Chilean five-piece Escombros. Utilizing the classic two-guitar/bass/drums/vocalist lineup, the band chugs convincingly through a range of songs, as well as a couple bonus tracks provided for this release. Perhaps the biggest misstep was placing Jimi Hendrix's "Stone Free" as the kickoff track on Escombros; it's tough to follow it up, and some tunes come off as a little anemic in comparison (I'm looking at you, "Romeo y Julieta"). The band recovers eventually, despite their tendency toward slower tempos and wide-throated, slightly histrionic vocals. There are satisfying songs to be had here, like the funky "Magnetism" and the bass-driven "Green-Eyed Lady". Generally speaking, the album gets stronger as it goes along, with the more formidable songs settling into the back half. Listeners looking for a classic rock fix but who have tired of the usual suspects will enjoy the overall vibe of this album, which uses familiar components in (somewhat) new ways. Hats off to Shadoks Music, once again.
