Guitarist Kevin Eubanks releases his 2013 effort The Messenger via Mack Avenue. Throughout 11 solid tracks, Eubanks and cast exhibit preeminent musicianship and a restless sense of creativity. Excepting brilliantly interpreted covers from John Coltrane (“Resolution”) and Jeff Beck (“Led Boots”), Eubanks handles all compositional duties.

“The Messenger” initiates capably with its Latin-infused groove and memorable head performed by sax (Bill Pierce) and guitar. The darker “Sister Veil” compels greater, featuring the lovely timbrel combination of soprano sax and trumpet (Duane Eubanks). “JB” is ‘funked-up’, reuniting Eubanks with brothers Duane and Robin (trombone). In improvisational terms, soloists add an abundance of colorful, captivating tones. Eubanks’s guitar playing shines whether he’s ‘comping’ or delivering melodically. His solo guitar feature, “Loved Ones”, is breathtakingly beautiful. The Messenger, sporting influence from multiple musical styles, consistently delivers without a hitch.
