Lars Sandberg, the Glaswegian who records and DJs under the name Funk D'Void, has been a presence on the electronic/house music scene for nearly two decades now. And, though his contribution to the respected Balance series contains mostly recent material, all those years of experience and finely-honed expertise shine through. Sandberg presents a cornucopia of techno/house sounds, 45 tracks over two discs, all of them edited and sequenced with care. Of-the-moment retro sounds abound, from the soaring synthpop of Kolombo's "Waiting For" and Joris Voorn's "RE-2001" to the staccato Detroit synths of Chris Malinchak's "Razor" and Tony Lionni's "Loving You". You'll also hear disco, chattering early-'90s techno, and even some more abstract, dissonant material such as Patrice Scott's "Tones & Things". With a handful of exclusives to boot, Balance 022 finds Funk D'Void offering a masterclass in how to curate an essential electronic dance mix. Not to be missed.
