Circus Devils — the Robert Pollard side project created with Todd and Tim Tobias — is the kind of band built for soundtracks. Their weird, shifting albums already play like the backdrop to films that don’t exist yet. Well, now Todd Tobias has brought one of those films into existence. He directed the self-described “no-budget experimental” film I Razor on his own, and composed this equally odd soundtrack to complement the movie. Tobias does a lot of work himself, with ringing guitars and skittering drums beats and 8-bit keys, and the results are moody and atmospheric throughout, especially on strange turns like “Therapy” or the clattering “Strangers in the Forest”. It’s telling, though, that much of the best stuff comes from Circus Devils’ contributions — like “Main Title (Lurking)” and “All the Good Ones Are Gone” — many of which have already been released. What makes the Circus Devils’ records so alternately interesting and frustrating is just how unpredictable and risk-taking they can be. They take hairpin turns with no warning. The oddities of I Razor are sometimes arresting, but also uniform. You settle into the sounds and get comfortable, and as you do the sounds wash over you. This may work as the backdrop to the film, but as standalone music too much of this sounds like a too-plain kind of weird.
