Casimer Pascal and Vincent Casimir are an uncle-nephew duo with a fondness for tempered quirkiness and encapsulating the blighted Midwest in song.
Such can be instantly gleaned from debut single, "O Sweet Joe Pye", a paean to the well-known North American weed that packs a melody as sugary as the cotton candy at the Illinois State Fair. To reflect the song's theme of suburban sprawl's wake, the "O Sweet Joe Pye" video pairs sleek footage of cityscapes with ramshackle home video stylings for a sweetly disorienting mixture. As with "O Sweet Joe Pye"'s obvious nods to Motown motifs, Casimer & Casimir are sure to pay respects to artists they share a fondness for in the video, encapsulated by a quick glance of a framed photo of Scott Walker. Like an early Walker song, "O Sweet Joe Pye" combines pop sensibility with something introspective and melancholy for a refreshingly mature blast of earworminess.
"O Sweet Joe Pye" is out now via Brille Records.
