Brooklyn’s Ancient Sky play a spaced-out, reverb-heavy form of guitar rock that can loosely be described as “psychedelic”. More polished than garage rock, the band still ploughs a furrow rife with guitar effects and raw-throated vocals, but with a strong sense of dynamics to keep things lively. Opener “Wishing Well” throws down the gauntlet with its tribal drumming, noodling keyboards and streaks of fuzz guitar, while subsequent tracks like “Master Cleanse” and “Mystery School” keep the jams rolling along.
Looking for that laid-back stoner-rock experience? Check out “Trick It” and standout track “The Thrace”, both of which get as close to mellowing out as this outfit can manage — always with an edgy, anxious undercurrent. If you’re in the mood for some cascading, slow-burn guitar jams, the seven-minute album closer “Hazy Mazy” is right up your alley. Plug it in and feed your head, kids.
