Mike Sempert – “Oceans of Rock and Roll” (stream) (Premiere)

The frontman for San Francisco's Birds & Batteries, Mike Sempert, has picked up and moved to Los Angeles with his new wife and a burgeoning solo career.

Mike Sempert‘s sound is very much rooted in the SoCal singer-songwriter sound with influences from ’70s classics like Gram Parsons and Fleetwood Mac. His new LP, Mid Dream, releases May 6th via Velvet Blue Music and we have a new track here from the album to share with you.

Sempert tells us that “‘Oceans of Rock and Roll’ is a look at the vastness of music. I used to get discouraged by the amount of music being made in these times, but this song is about embracing and surrendering to that bigness, like a giant heart beat. This especially refers to all the essential music that came before us, by artists we now consider legends, not to mention all the unknown greats that once existed and those that exist right now, the idea that we float on top of those sounds. They hold us up. Also, it’s wild how much natural connection exists between the imagery of sound and water — the idea of reverb being wet, of a voice being drowned out, waves, saturation, depth, it goes on and on. So that was fun to explore. All told, its music about music.”
