Familiar Looking Strangers – “Saturday Night” (audio) (Premiere)

PopMatters presents "Saturday Night", a wah-wah guitar-heavy tune by Liverpool-based rockers Familiar Looking Strangers.

The wah-wah guitar and police siren that open “Saturday Night” may lead one to think she has stumbled onto a soundtrack for a ’70’s police drama. Alas, it is not, although anyone looking to develop a retro police drama should probably take note.

“Saturday Night” a number from Liverpool-based Familiar Looking Strangers‘ forthcoming self-titled EP. Frontman Vinny McPoland says of the song, “’Saturday Night’ was originally written early 2009 and demoed later that year in a rehearsal room environment. The final cut was recorded in the US after a night out in Milwaukee. It inspired a new darker direction for the song which turned the chorus from a major to minor and added a final verse.” The tune clearly reflects the band’s interest in a straightforward take on the classic rock formula. The soulful guitar playing and electric organ that form the foreground of “Saturday Night” are the stuff of numerous a classic rock track.

Familiar Looking Strangers EP is out on June 10th.
