Lanterns on the Lake – “Elodie” (video) (Premiere)

England has become a veritable hotbed for post-rock, with acts like Maybeshewill putting their own unique takes on what has become a much worn-out genre. The evocatively named Lanterns on the Lake are growing players in this impressive scene. In his PopMatters review of the band’s newest album, Until the Colours Run, John Bergstrom calls the music “deeper”, “richer”, and “better-crafted” than anything it has put out before.

One need only listen to “Elodie”, the album’s opening track, to see why this is the case. The video for the song, directed by Kev Craig, “is made up of thousands and thousands of photographs all printed out, ripped up and painstakingly animated,” says the band. The latticework visuals of the song are a fine match for the rise and fall of “Elodie”, which hits intense peaks in its chorus and ends in a tranquil, piano-led reverie. “You could say the making of this video is reflective of the making of the record,” the group says of Craig’s work, “The record was also a trying process for us, but I’d like to think the results of both were worth it.”
