Bonnie “Prince” Billy, aka Will Oldham, has once again teamed up with the Cairo Gang, aka Emmett Kelly, for a limited 7-inch single to coincide with the release of a film named Spirit of Akasha. Akasha celebrates Australian surf culture, paying particular homage to the 1971 film Morning of the Earth. Oldham and Kelley dust off the Terry Hannagan cover “I’ll Be Alright” from Earth‘s original soundtrack and make it their flipside for the 7-inch. Sure, altogether it’s only eight minutes of music. But it also carries the communal magic touch that made their other outings of ragged folk so sturdy and memorable. A-side “We Love Our Hole” is Oldham at his most melodically clear. And Kelly is just as well-versed with how much not to play as he is in filling in the spaces. “No bullshit I am giving,” goes a line in the second verse. Yeah, pretty much.
