Unlike Mumford & Sons, whose old-timey name suggests an authenticity that is more manufactured than genuine, Sons of Bill are actually what their name implies. The Sons of Bill are actually the sons of William Wilson, professor emeritus of theology and literature at the University of Virginia. (The group hails from Charlottesville.) Sons of Bill let their sharp songcraft and careful lyricism shine on “Brand New Paradigm”, a track off of their forthcoming album Love & Logic.
Abe Wilson, one of the three brothers that make up Sons of Bill, says to PopMatters about the song, “Generally speaking, this song is about the basic tension between the individual consciousness and the turning universe. It’s about giving yourself to the tides of life instead of fighting the current, so to speak—trying to resolve this tension through love, drugs, religion, etc. Beyond that, I wanted to leave the song open to interpretation and let the listener fill in the specifics from his or her own experience.”
Love & Logic is out on September 30th through Thirty Tigers.
