The Memphis, Tennessee folk trio Memphis Dawls, comprised of Holly Cole (guitars and vocals), Jana Misener (cello and vocals), and Krista Wroten (viola, mandolin, accordion, and vocals), has already made a significant splash prior to the release of its forthcoming LP, Rooted in the Bone. Though the band has yet to release its first full-length they have opened for legendary acts like Emmylou Harris, as well as more recent musical innovators like Jack White. “Skin Like a Cage”, a cut off of Rooted in the Bone, is both a cozy fit within the recent upswings in folk music and a throwback to the vocal harmonies of Linda Ronstadt’s best records.
The group tells PopMatters about the tune: “‘Skin Like a Cage’ was written for those who consistently rely on distractions to conceal their own unhappiness and remain oblivious to loneliness, but it also offers hope.”
Rooted in the Bone is out on November 4th via Madjack Records.
