The San Francisco and Birmingham, UK-based Matthew Edwards and the Unfortunates are aptly named. On their debut LP, The Fates, they explore all manner of morose topics. Yet while the lyrical content of The Fates may be bleak, the music makes these saturnine musings delightful to listen to.

One could broadly classify Matthew Edwards and the Unfortunates as “folk” or perhaps “baroque pop” and she wouldn’t be entirely wrong; but, of course, nor would she be entirely right. The Fates includes numerous different stylistic ventures, from the glum Gallic folk of album highlight “The English Blues” to the pizzicato-driven “Sandrine Bonnaire” to the Americana-esque “The Liar”. Adventurous in its taste and highly skilled in its execution, The Fates is an LP that is best not consigned to the limitations of its initial release, a small run of 300 vinyl copies. Fortunately, this under-the-radar gem is getting a proper CD and digital release; in the meantime, you can stream it below.
