Alana Yorke’s Dream Magic is an album of mystical vibes and secret forest enchantment. It is a hidden ceremony of piano melodies and code-like percussion, all lifting Yorke’s raw and scar-covered voice. There is understated pain and sorrow in her vocals and, while the music is often hypnotizing with a meditative, chanting vibe, driving beats take you into an imaginary battlefield where her voice is the sound of the wounded. Yorke could be described as an ambient-leaning Cat Power, a darker, rawer Enya, or a Florence and the Machine on the down low, but her sound is unique and the world she takes you to feels very much her own. There is sincerity and an everyday honesty in her lyrics, even if the overall feeling is that this is folk music for dark fairy tales and brooding legends.
