Fireships – “Come Back to Me” (audio) (Premiere)

Folk-inspired vocal delivery and whimsical guitars come together on this cut from the forthcoming debut by the New York based indie outfit Fireships.

The New York indie folk outfit Fireships, according to their own description, “patrol the foggy edges of American music”. Headed up by Andrew Vladeck (of the Honey Brothers fame), the group is set to release their self-titled debut this spring. Leading up to the release you can stream “Come Back to Me” below, a track that sounds something like an indie campfire jam, with a sing-along chorus and a convivial mood making it an ideal invitation for the Fireships LP. Existing somewhere between indie rock and folk revival, Fireships have offered up a promising start with “Come Back to Me”.

Vladeck tells PopMatters, “This started with the simple challenge of writing a song that is specifically set in my hometown, New York City. I had been hearing songs from other musicians about NYC, musicians who don’t live here, about rooftops and bridges and the like. Hit or miss. I’ve shied away from writing blatantly about NYC out of the fear of sounding corny or trite. But I was envious of these songsters, singing about my hometown! If they could, I should find a way that felt right.

“Sometimes it’s easier to write about a place you visit than a place you live — focus on the few things that stand out. A lifetime here makes it difficult take in a rooftop view without the clutter of memories. So I kept it simple: a story about a day in my neighborhood, amidst the landmarks in my life. Prospect Park. The clock tower of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. Fourth Avenue. Musically I was going through a huge Paul Simon and Lou Reed phase, who both happen to be New Yorkers. It all really added up for me with this one.”

Fireships is out on 21 April. You can pre-order it via Bandcamp.
