Steve Gunn and the Black Twig Pickers – “Trailways Ramble” (video)

They create mesmerizing tunes that can be simultaneously spare and yet full of musical content and swirling melodies. On “Trailways Ramble” from the group’s recent Seasonal Hire, the indie folk textures give way to a transfixing drone, undercut by a jawharp, that takes the idea of a physical journey and transforms it into a stunning bit of mind travel. Interesting, the music most suggests the Doors to my ears, especially tracks like “Riders on the Storm” and “The End”. Simply superb.
