Samantha Bee Leaves ‘The Daily Show’, Will Host a New TBS Comedy

The latest of The Daily Show's classic correspondents to leave, Samantha Bee, is jumping right back in to the world of television with a new program on TBS.

Earlier this year, TBS announced that it had picked up a family comedy series created by Samantha Bee and Jason Jones, both of whom are best known for their lengthy tenures on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, where Bee was the longest-running correspondent. (The two are also married to each other.) Bee just ended her time at The Daily Show with the program’s 30 April episode.

However, Bee’s chops as a political satirist will still be put to good use quite soon. In tandem with the yet-to-be named family comedy she and Jones are making at TBS, she will also be leading up a new program where she will “apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues.” Whether this means TBS is trying to carve its own space in the “fake news” world, following the lead set by Comedy Central (The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Nightly Show) and HBO (Last Week Tonight), has yet to be announced.

Executive Vice President of Original Programming for TBS, Brett Weitz, said in a press release:

We’re thrilled to have Sam join Jason at TBS and really make this a family affair. We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation… Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation. After watching Sam’s work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show.
