The new track by the Portland band feels like a gentle respite from the modern world.
Barely a year after forming, Portland band Crow and the Canyon sound like a tightly-knit unit on their debut album Leaving Soon. Highlighted by the dual harmony vocals of Ben Larsen and Leigh Jones, their sumptuous, gently rustic folk music hearkens back to another much more innocent time. Indeed,, it feels like you're swept back decades when you listen to the new track "Gentle on My Mind".
"I had been playing 'Gentle on My Mind' for a while solo," Larsen says. "It's a bit of a tome but by the time the band started to get together I had it mostly down and it became one of the first tunes we worked on. I had the idea to do the whole thing as a faster duet because, while this song has been recorded a thousand times I'd never heard it up tempo or as a duet. I think it really helped to show us the potential of the band and to help us find our sound or at least a path to discovering our sound. John Hartford is one of my biggest influences and heroes and I'm really happy with how it turned out."
