Soy Un Caballo: Les Hueres de Raison

The male/female duo of Soy un Caballo concentrates on being enigmatic and adorable the way Axl Rose concentrates on being loud. The cover illustration relies on a palette of muted greens and browns and the music behind it sounds like a continuation of the same thing. It’s picturebook pop made with a miniaturist’s palette. A glockenspiel pings along as mildly as a bubble and quiet voices sing, first “Ba ba ba”, then words in French. Will Oldham, aka Bonnie Prince Billy, joins the two Belgians on “La Chambre”, sounding as if he might lose the thread of the tune at any moment. Different noises wander and twinkle and trickle and tease. It’s compelling and happy, in a faintly soulless way.
