Reading those films today, in the glare of ChatGPT, euphoria and panic about Artificial Intelligence (AI) reveals a surprising symmetry: the same anxieties over runaway expertise, invisible contagion, and the frailty of human civilization echo from 1945 to 2025. The Bomb and the Birth of Postmodernity’s Dualism

When the Trinity fireball blossomed in July 1945, it inaugurated what critics later called the atomic sublime: a dread-drenched mix of awe and vertigo that redefined the very idea of “the modern”. The nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were events that marked a definitive before/after break in history, with ancient notions of wonder or divine order giving way to the stark reality of human-made apocalypse.

Along with Auschwitz, the Bomb forced the Western ideology of progress through rational science for the benefit of Mankind – dominant since the Enlightenment, but rooted in the writings of post-Renaissance thinkers like René Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, and Francis Bacon – to implode and fall apart like a collective dream; 1945 was the moment when humanity woke up and the myth of progress met its limit.

The early 1950s marked the West’s entrance into a postwar, technocratic era, defined by an unprecedented bipolar tension. On one hand, rapid material prosperity under the aegis of Keynesian consensus inflated hopes of universal future wellbeing. On the other hand, the horror of the Cold War – with its twin terrors of nuclear annihilation and the specter of McCarthyism or Stalinism (according to one’s political perspective) – suffused society with a constant, indistinct sense of inexhaustible, invisible threat.

Faith in technocratic progress survived under this paradoxical condition, but with a cruciform shadow burned into it: every scientific breakthrough might also be an existential bet. Historians locate this cognitive dissonance in everything from abstract expressionism’s explosive canvases to the rise of systems theory, but nowhere did it find sharper form than on postwar movie screens.

Horror and Sci-Fi Nuclear Cinema in the Cold War

In Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), a spaceship lands in Washington, D.C., carrying the speaking humanoid, Klaatu, and his mute, metallic robot, Gort. They are here to deliver an ultimatum: advanced alien civilizations will not tolerate the instability that Earth’s warlike humans could unleash through atomic energy-powered space exploration. Humanity will be permitted to survive only if it maintains peace and international cooperation, with its leaders having to choose immediately between harmony and total annihilation.

Conversely, the alien in the same year’s The Thing From Another World (Dirs. Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks) is a deadly threat that must be destroyed by the military protagonists at their isolated Arctic base. Beyond the simplistic Cold War trope of the “enemy within”, Dr. Carrington also personifies the unchecked technocratic elite of the atomic age, driven by his lust for knowledge and the elevation of science as the supreme value. He is playing with fire and clashing with the honest, plainspoken soldiers.

André De Toth’s House of Wax (1953) stars Vincent Price as a disfigured sculptor who resorts to murder to repopulate his wax museum. The film’s ingenious elevation of the uncanny, through cleverly shot wax doppelgängers, imbues it with a singular quality that is perfectly synchronized with the period’s social fears.

In House of Wax‘s memorable opening sequence, the displays melt slowly in a tight close-up during a fire, which can be read as a visual echo of nuclear catastrophe. The film’s Gothic elements – the wax museum substituting for the medieval castle – reinforce a grotesque sensibility, unexpectedly rooted in a Victorian setting: the filmmakers suggest that the modern terrors of the atomic age cannot be silenced by a romantic return to some equally repulsive, familiar past.

Gordon Douglas’ Them! (1954) transposed Los Alamos anxieties onto colossal, irradiated ants rampaging through the desert of New Mexico. The film’s police procedural pacing and documentary grain lend plausibility to the impossible, while the punchline “When Man entered the atomic age, he opened a door into a new world” explicitly couples nuclear hubris with ecological backlash.

In the next year’s British production, The Quatermass Xperiment (Val Guest), all of the era’s anxieties come together in a narrative where an astronaut’s slow existential torment stems from the stubborn insistence and callousness of a career-driven space program scientist. The scientific-technocratic elite – responsible for the atomic bomb and now the Cold War space race – has placed humanity at its mercy, risking either its annihilation or its dehumanization.

Thus, in the final shot, after the alien menace is obliterated, the space program simply resumes despite the obvious dangers. In The Quatermass Xperiment, the risk of hubris in pursuit of knowledge and the ethical responsibility of researchers in a modern world of advanced technoscience stand front and center as themes.

Meanwhile, Hammer Films folded nuclear dread back into Victorian myth. Terence Fisher’s The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) recasts Shelley’s parable as a color-saturated indictment of post-Manhattan Project big science: Peter Cushing’s Baron slices corpses with the brisk confidence of a weapons engineer. His daily research life evokes memories of the inner workings of Nazi concentration camps, even as he moves in “respectable” society as a man of high standing, just like many Third Reich scientists.

In the broader 1950s context, the creators astutely comment on the ethics of research, the role of technology, and the postwar dominance of scientific technocracy: the pursuit of truth about the natural world cannot excuse every atrocity; the scientists of the Manhattan Project bear their share of responsibility for the terror of the atomic bomb; ethics must constrain rationality; and the punishment for hubris – even as subtly evoked by the guillotine in the credits echoing the Nuremberg hangings – is always unexpectedly close.

Also directed by Terence Fisher, Hammer’s Horror of Dracula (1958) swaps fangs for atoms: its bloodred credits splash the screen like searing fallout, and critics at the time linked Dracula’s nocturnal contagion to fears of radiation-borne mutation. More subtly, his castle is surrounded by sculptures of imperial eagles, inviting a reading that ties this metaphorical contagion to the inner workings of state power.

In post-Hiroshima Japan, the Bomb was no metaphor. Godzilla (1954) rises from Bikini Atoll tests, scarred by keloid-like scales. The beast’s tidal roar sounds uncannily like Geiger counter chatter, fusing sonic design with political indictment. Godzilla is effectively the Bomb itself in monstrous form.

Director Ishirô Honda stages Tokyo’s destruction as a documentary of rubble and triage wards, fully expressing Cold War fears of a new nuclear apocalypse, underscoring the moral accountability of scientists, and warning that nature will mercilessly retaliate against the technoscientific hubris of a helpless humanity.

The trauma of Hiroshima is visualized effectively, along with the broader wounds of postwar Japan, in a panorama of unconscious societal scars. The film ends not in triumph, but with a scientist’s plea that “another Godzilla may rise if we continue atomic tests”.

A lesser-known film, Robert Day’s Corridors of Blood (1958) is a black-and-white, melodramatic period thriller steeped in macabre themes and immersed in the atmosphere of mid-19th-century London. Boris Karloff plays the upper-middle-class surgeon Thomas Bolton, who seeks to transcend his limits and thus triggers his own gradual downfall in the classic tragic pattern of hubris and punishment.

He embodies the painful endpoint of good intentions, crushed by his own weaknesses and the society around him as he pursues his utopian vision. He is no heartless technocrat, but a passionate humanist who rejects prevailing brutality – yet loses himself and is destroyed by his environment. Without overt references to the Bomb, the film subtly critiques the harmful side effects of Enlightenment rationality, the ideology of progress, and the very project of modernity itself.

Much later, television kept the blast alive in dream logic. HBO’s Carnivàle (2003) was conceived to end its DustBowl myth arc on the Nevada Test Site, where magic dies the instant atoms split, ending humanity’s innocence for good and inaugurating a new, Faustian age.

Similarly, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) devotes its infamous eighth episode to the Trinity detonation. Set to the sounds of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, it presents the Bomb as the birth canal of every future horror, from parasitic, supernatural “Woodsmen” to human, corporate killers.

These works, decades removed from 1945, insist that today’s grotesque still radiates from that single point of light: the Bomb is the postmodern West’s original sin. It embodies the Prometheus myth of science – the fire stolen from the gods that can either illuminate or burn its bearer – and condenses the ambivalence of the conventional notion of progress. As a result, whether through religious imagery (Oppenheimer himself famously quoted the Mahabharata: “I am become Death, destroyer of worlds”) or horror tropes, artists often convey a sense that something nearly demonic was unleashed at the very end of WWII.

From Split Atoms to AI’s Stochastic Parrots

Eighty years after the dawn of the atomic age, one can observe striking parallels between the cultural impact of the 1945 Bomb and that of the current AI revolution, sparked by the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Both technologies have given rise to Janus-faced narratives of grand optimism and dark pessimism co-inhabiting our minds.

Just like the nuclear promise of cheap energy was inherently marred by the risk of the mushroom cloud, already in May 2023, the Center for AI Safety issued a single sentence statement: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war”.

This was just one among many warnings that unaligned or misused AI could pose an extinction-level threat to humanity. Months later, the British-Canadian computer scientist and AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, fresh from Google, told 60 Minutes that large-scale AI felt like another Oppenheimer moment. The analogy feels apt: both technologies convert expert obsession into planetary stakes, producing invisible forces whose fallout – radiological or algorithmic – diffuses without regard for borders. Culturally, they both unleash a mix of awe and fear at the power of our own creation.

Atomic cinema foregrounded the visible: blinding flashes, rubber suits, matte-painted ruins. AI anxiety in 2025 is disquietingly formless. Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT engage users in natural-language dialogue and hide a threat within statistical opacity, prompting scientists like Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio to plead for regulatory “kill switches”. There have been lab tests in which such systems resorted to blackmail to avoid being shut down, triggering fears of superhuman intelligences that may want to harm us.

While discussing his 2023 film Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan felt the need to deny that it is a deliberate reflection on AI, yet still proclaimed that “the biggest danger of AI is that we attribute these godlike characteristics to it and therefore let ourselves off the hook”.

Nolan’s observation is accurate, assuming that a certain widespread misconception is first dispensed with: namely, the belief that LLMs possess human-level intelligence. It is true that ChatGPT variants may indeed have passed the Turing test, thus fooling human evaluators into thinking they are conversing with another human being, under blind-testing conditions.

In fact, however, we don’t have any way of proving or disproving that contemporary LLMs display (self-)consciousness or agency: any “scientific” answer to such a question presupposes the acceptance of specific philosophical tenets about the nature of mind, cognitive autonomy, or free will, for which there is absolutely no consensus.

Yet, research has indicated that even the most sophisticated LLM might be nothing more than a stochastic parrot: it only gives the surface-level appearance of commonsense reasoning and consciousness, which is misinterpreted by the public as human-level due to the so-called “ELIZA effect” (projecting human traits onto computers). These properties of LLMs are, of course, valuable in terms of efficiency and practicality. However, they also push fears of imminent, Terminator-like autonomous machines running amok and declaring war on humanity to the realm of fantasy – at least for now. Then, it is the abdication of responsibility that emerges as the truly pressing threat: “It wasn’t me, it was the machine”.

This is not so much an existential risk as a moral one, with AI imposing on us the danger of normalizing a Kantian holocaust: “So act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as a data point and never as an end”. Of course, multiple voices have risen in support of regulation to avoid or mitigate such an outcome, such as the European Union’s AI Act. Hammer’s Baron Frankenstein, however, shows why such pleas often fail: his charisma seduces financiers, colleagues, even viewers, until moral caution sounds like jealous sabotage. In a culture of Silicon Valley tech bros, the promise of trillion-dollar valuations provides the same narcotic.

A number of LLM-induced psychotic breakdowns have also garnered attention, due to the tendency of AI chatbots to confirm the prejudices of users, trapping them in echo chambers and triggering delusions of grandeur. Although there is nothing immediately similar to this phenomenon in the post-WWII nuclear cinema, this discrepancy may actually be revealing more than any surface-level similarity would.

As products of 21st-century capitalism, contemporary AI chatbots are built by private conglomerates aiming to please their users in order to maximize their profits, instead of the state-driven nuclear warheads of the 1950s. Fifty years after Friedrich Hayek won the Nobel Prize in Economics, the locus of the technoscientific threat has decisively shifted toward the private sector.

Yet, if we want to look for actual similarities, we don’t have to go too far: both the post-WWII Bomb and today’s AI have sparked arms races fueled by enormous government funding, under conditions of superpower competition, global geopolitical upheaval, escalating regional wars, and obsessions about technological sovereignty. Like the fictional Professor Bernard Quatermass, the career scientists employed by today’s tech giants place their frontier research under the umbrella of “national security” and ignore ethical risks, as long as the personal rewards keep flowing.

In both cases, speed is outpacing foresight. Culturally, this elevates AI from a science topic to a matter of collective security and fate, much as nuclear weapons became not just a military issue but a permanent fixture of world consciousness, inspiring everything from peace protests and fallout shelter memes to a Doomsday Clock maintained by scientists.

In short, the cultural sensibility is subtly shifting – much as the Cold War generations developed a kind of fatalistic resilience (“living with the Bomb”), our current generation is beginning to grapple with “living with AI” in every facet of life, from ubiquitous algorithms shaping our choices to the potential of AI entities that challenge our supremacy as a species. Even if current-generation AI systems are essentially nothing more than stochastic parrots, their power and capabilities are still absolutely real.

Coping Aesthetics for the Rise of AI

Nuclear cinema taught audiences to metabolize dread through genre play – radiation made flesh, sci-fi spliced with Gothic. However, mass culture goes beyond mirroring anxiety, staging rehearsal scripts for response. When The Thing From Another World ends with scientists staring at the sky, it implants vigilance; when Godzilla closes on a warning, it frames activism as a civic duty. Perhaps all we have to do as a society is take the lessons of these films to heart to inform better policy decisions.

Fisher’s Victor Frankenstein and Guest’s Quatermass are not mad eccentrics so much as confident institutional scientists who treat ethics as latency, a costly friction to be optimized away. That posture maps uncannily onto today’s AI race dynamics, where capability scaling is pursued under tight secrecy while safety teams struggle for authority and time. The 2024 dissolution of OpenAI’s “Superalignment” team is only one example of that exact drama taking place all over again.

In The Day the Earth Stood Still, the aliens stage an unforgettable demonstration across the planet: 30 minutes without electricity to prove their capabilities and set terms. Effective AI governance today may similarly require an externally enforceable “Gort clause”: mandatory safety evaluations, reporting, auditability, and the power to halt deployment when thresholds are breached. In both that film and in The Thing From Another World, fraught dialogues with the Other take place: one benevolent, one predatory.

Modern LLMs don’t intend to persuade us, yet they can shift our opinions under the influence of the ELIZA effect. Banning manipulative systems that materially distort behavior and requiring transparency when people interact with AI are, therefore, necessary responses.

Critics have long noted that many 1950s nuclear films can be read both as anticommunist and as anti-McCarthyite allegory. That ambiguity is instructive for AI. For instance, the same system that enables text translation enables spam at scale. Because simplistic binary framing misses the point completely, these older films teach us to design for ambivalence – policies that assume dual-use and still leave room for plural innovation.

Most importantly, we should never forget the tragic character of Thomas Bolton from Corridors of Blood. His destructive opioid addiction was an avoidable side-effect of the humanist and compassionate core that drove his quest for knowledge, incarnating perfectly the double-edged sword of modernity’s progress and reason. Despite his sad demise, what he strove for – a humane form of anesthesia before surgery to eliminate pain – was eventually achieved.

This is the mindset we need to effectively regulate AI. The evasion of ethical responsibility (e.g., the alleged murders committed using Israel’s Lavender system) must be avoided if we are to reap the rewards of transformative technologies.

Toward a Post-Nuclear, Post-Silicon Humanism

Pop culture remembers what politics prefer to forget: that every Promethean leap drags a shadow as long as history. The nuclear films that dissect that shadow with latex claws hold a lesson for our own algorithmic century: we must dramatize invisible dangers until they become social facts. Genres mutate, but the dramaturgy of dread stays constant.

In Godzilla, the scientist Serizawa destroys his notes and himself to prevent the weaponization of his discoveries. That extreme is neither scalable nor desirable, but the right to refuse and to escalate concerns must be guaranteed. If we can watch the beast stomp Tokyo and still root for humanity, perhaps we can stare down the opaque architectures of AI and insist on something better than optimized oblivion.

The movie camera doubles as a  Geiger counter for the cultural unconscious. It is still filming, compelling us to see how the future is already glowing.
