After taking a nearly one-year hiatus, ambient MC, Alias, is slotted for a September release of his newest album, Resurgam. After fleeing the monotonous climate of Oakland, Alias (the recording alias of a certain Brendon Whitney) returned home to Maine for a real winter.

Resurgam, Latin for "I shall rise again," is Whitney's first solo instrumental album in five years. This is not to say that he doesn't call on a little artistic support from fellow Anticon label-mates.

On "Well Water Black" Whitney combines the xylophone and drum machine with the singsong slam poetics of Why?'s Jonathan Yoni Wolf. The result is a breathtaking blend of Aphex Twin and ee cummings.

Later on friends, The One AM Radio lend their shoegaze to "The Weathering".

While Alias may be best known for his collaborations and remixes (working with everyone from Ben Gibbard to Saul Williams), Resurgam is set to be Whitney's most intricate and notable release to date.

Indie pop in 2009 was about all young energy and autumnal melancholy, about the rush you feel when you first hear an exciting new band, and the bittersweet feeling you get when your favorite band calls it quits.
