Chris Smither Seeks the Essential with “All About the Bones” (premiere)

“All About the Bones” is peak Chris Smither, a song that seems at once both a revelation and not unlike the return of a long-awaited friend.

Celebrated American songwriter Chris Smither releases his latest album, All About the Boneson 3rd May 2024 via Signature Sounds. The recording provides further evidence of his prodigious songwriting, playing and singing abilities as evidenced by the latest single, the LP’s titular track.

Built on the kind of haunting, meditative guitar figures we’ve come to expect from Smither and reinforced by his oracular singing voice and heart-searing lyrics, “All About the Bones” is peak Smither, a song that seems at once both a revelation and not unlike the return of a long-awaited friend. It stands as evidence that he remains one of the most consistent and truthful artists of his time, bridging this and the last century seamlessly and in a way that is never tired or imitative.

Joining him on the tune are longtime collaborator David “Goody” Goodrich (electric guitar, electric diddley bow, percussion), Zak (drums, percussion), Cheekus (baritone sax) and Betty Soo (vocals).

Reflecting on the track, Smither offers, “This is about as solid as it gets, and rest assured, even this won’t last forever. It’s a theme that surfaces many times in the album, the search for the essence, the inner framework that holds everything together, which we hope will be lasting, and like everything, is transitory. S’OK, I can live with it.”

“All About the Bones” is available on digital streaming platforms on 20 March with tour dates to follow.
