Andrew Phillips

Andrew Phillips is an entertainment writer/editor living in Brooklyn, New York. He recently left his post as Managing Editor for the Daily Washington Law Reporter, a small legal periodical in the District of Columbia to pursue his fortune in the big(er) city. Having attended hundreds upon hundreds of live events he is unique in having dipped in and out countless musical subcultures without ever gaining a sense of dress or personal style. In addition to being a rabid concert buff, he maintains an interest and expertise in new and emergent music, musicians, and youth subcultures. In addition to his work with PopMatters he has garnered a number of bylines with other publications including Newsweek and the Washingtonian. In 2003 he acted as editor-in-chief for a small arts and entertainment monthly The Alcove, which featured interviews with musicians and celebrities including Guster, Chuck Palahniuk, The Shins, and Mars Volta. A graduate of the George Washington University with a B.A. in American Studies, his award-winning thesis presented field-work exploring contemporary skinhead culture, with a focus on gay, black, and minority members. In the course of this work he refused several attempts to shave his head. As to personal performance experience, Andrew once sang for a pirate punk band, the aptly (though unfortunately) titled Captain Blueballs and the Salty Sea Men. Presumably, he was the captain.
