Pryor Stroud: “Bury It” underscores everything about CHVRCHES‘ sound that sets the band apart from other synthpop revivalists: the crystalline production, the prismatic synth pulses, the massive melodies that resound with conviction and unbridled euphoria. Sonically, it stacks up well against the other singles from Every Open Eye, the band’s masterful LP from earlier this year. The chorus — a clarion call for emotional renewal — lifts Lauren Mayberry’s voice up to a near-shout; as she repeats the titular phrase over and over again, it transforms from a simple piece of advice into an incantation breathing new life into a withered soul. Chris Ingalls: This is one of those songs that sounds so synthetic, so sickly sugary sweet that you feel guilty for loving it, like you just devoured a box of Krispy Kremes. It’s a completely artificial pop song, but hey, it’s a damn good one. The wall of synths march through the song like an army of teenage girls on the hunt for the latest Hot Topic outlet and Hayley Williams’ vocals provide the requisite heartfelt hooks. Hey, let’s be honest: if you want something edgy, there’s plenty of edge available elsewhere. If you want a 21st century version of ABBA, here you go. [8/10]
Chad Miller: The vocals seemed way too processed to me. Both vocalists have such a powerful delivery and sound, and some of that seemed to get lost. The song sounds to me like it’s attempting to get some radio plays, and while the chorus is catchy in parts, it also seems very plain in others. The lyrics are pretty cheesy as well. [6/10]
