Classixx – “Grecian Summer” (Singles Going Steady)

Classixx returns with another bright, bubbling over, neo-funk dance track that pulsates with a certain effusive optimism that somersaults in your stomach.

Pryor Stroud: With “Grecian Summer”, Classixx returns with another bright, bubbling over, neo-funk dance track that pulsates with a certain effusive optimism that somersaults in your stomach. It approximates a very specific euphoria, perhaps best encapsulated by that sensation you get when you realize your night will go on longer — potentially, much longer — than you initially anticipated. The chopped-up vocal snippets could be sampled from some diva-headlining smash hit from the ’80s, but they never last long enough for you to discern what they signify, other than the mood they project: that is, pure ecstasy. [8/10]

Chad Miller: Feels like a glorious trip through the decades. It’s nice to hear these diverse sections flow so smoothly into each other. A lot of this is owed to the strength of the vocal sample, featuring a really pretty melody which is accented perfectly by the instrumentation. [9/10]

Emmanuel Elone: “Grecian Summer” opens up as a non-assuming track and remains that way through its entirety. The barebones electronic noises are not that entertaining, and the synths that pop in towards the chorus are pretty thin. What really makes this Classixx song pop is its vocal samples in the hook, which sound breathy and have an oddly sweet tone to them. Though this isn’t a great song, it’s at least decent, if not good in its own inconspicuous way. [6/10]

Chris Ingalls: This is poised to become my Guilty Pleasure Single of 2016. Pure old-school synths beep, boop and blip, setting the scene for a frothy dance beat and some chirpy female vocals, all designed to create a packed dance floor. Imagine “Borderline”-era Madonna filtered through Daft Punk. Sound fun? It is. [8/10]
